Location & Date

Location: Latitude: , Longitude: 2.186944
General location information: Guayas river, Guayaquil Gulf
HAB Area code(s): EC-02
Additional location information: The influence of tides to which the Guayas River is exposed makes it a very fertile area, giving rise to high diversity of phytoplankton typical of tropical environments and the interaction of oceanic water masses and freshwater.
Bloom event dates (yyyy/mm/dd): Event Date:2023-09-11
Start: 2023-09-11, End: 2023-09-12
Quarantine levels dates (yyyy/mm/dd):

Microalgae

Causative organism known: Yes
Causative Species/Genus: Amphidinium carterae Hulburt 1957 (277600 cells/L)
Samples were taken at 2 different locations not far apart from each other; the second point had a lower concentration of detritus, having a concentration of 208 200 Cells/L. Organisms were in the stage of cellular death.
Co-Ocurring Species/Genus:
Chlorophyll concentration, if known: µg/l
Additional bloom information: One of the reasons why this bloom did not persist in the system for long was the salinity range. The development of many species of epiphytic dinoflagellates occurs at 32 practical salinity units (PSU) (Hernández, 2019), and the locally obtained value was 1 PSU, indicative of a river with marine influence.
