General Information

Event name: US-11-005
Country: UNITED STATES
Nature of the harmful event:
Seafood toxins
Event directly affected:
Shellfish
Toxicity detected: Yes (Approximate range: 9210 µg PSP/kg)
Associated syndrome: PSP
Unexplained toxicity: No
Species implicated in toxin transmission (transvector): PSP -blue mussels, California mussels, manila clams, butter clams, varnish clams. ASP - blue mussels. DSP - blue mussels & manila clams
Report the outcome of a monitoring programme: Yes (WA Dept. of Health, Office of Shellfish & Water Protection, Marine Biotoxin Monitoring Program)
Event occurred before in this location: Yes (Most of the inlets of N. Puget Sound have had previous PSP closures. Penn Cove and Holmes Harbor had ASP blooms in 2005. ASP toxin did not reach the action level of 20 ppm in 2011. DSP toxin was detected for the first time in 2011. There were no DSP closures in N. Puget Sound because the toxin levels were below the action level of 16 µm.)
