Microalgae

Causative organism known: Yes
Causative Species/Genus: Gonyaulax turbynei Murray et Whitting 1899 ( cells/L)
Co-Ocurring Species/Genus: Gonyaulax sp. ( cells/L)
Gonyaulax hyalina
Gymnodinium sp. ( cells/L)
Phaeocystis pouchetii (Hariot) Lagerheim 1893 ( cells/L)
Chlorophyll concentration, if known: 9.6 µg/l
Additional bloom information: In 1981, the most conspicuous species present were a variety of dinoflagellates, in particular the armored species G. hyalina and Gonyaulax turbinyei and an unarmored Gymnodinium sp. Although in hind sight it seems obvious that these organisms were most probably responsible for the mass accumulation of the mucilage, at the time it was thought that these dinoflagellates had been entrapped, like many other phytoplankton species and much detrital matte
