| Kit used: Yes | Type of kit used: Scotia | |||||||||||
| Additional information: | Shellfish homogenates are received on ice, extracted, and a Scotia rapid test determines whether the sample is positive or negative. Samples that are positive on Scotia are then tested using a mouse bioassay to determine concentration of PSP toxins. | |||||||||||
| Economic losses: | Commercial areas in Humboldt and Tomales Bay went under biotoxin closures and had more frequent testing. Recreational advisories were placed on all 4 counties at different times, indirect economic losses from lost rec. harvest. | |||||||||||
| Management decision: | Precautionary biotoxin closures were placed on growing areas initially, but they were allowed to remain open if twice weekly testing from growing area product showed results lower than 80µg/100g. | |||||||||||
| Additional harmful effect information: | Recreational advisory was in place in all four counties, from the time of first positive result above 80µg/100g until all sites had two consecutive samples below 80µg/100g collected 14 days apart. | |||||||||||
